Dancing and Calling
Andrea lives a life of scholarly angst life of scholarly angst to link to academic page), but the counterbalance to that has always been their involvement in folk music and dance communities. Andrea began learning to call contra dances while living in Lexington, KY, in the heart of one of the country's richest folk dance regions. They honed their craft after moving back to Chicago, and have since become a regular caller at the many Chicago-area dances. If you come to one of Andrea's dances, you will enjoy dances that flow, feel good in your body, and with concise and clear walk-throughs that leave plenty of time for dancing.
Andrea is especially dedicated to teaching beginner-level dancers, and they love helping people who are “not dancers” become comfortable moving their bodies and discovering the joy that comes from dancing in community. Andrea is also passionate about gender inclusivity in dance, as well as cultivating consent and accessibility in dance culture. They are a co-organizer and booker for Chicago’s gender-free contra dance - Queer Contra Chicago - and they love being asked to call dances using gender-neutral language.
